On September 26, the U.S. lingerie brand “Victoria’s Secret” will hold its first lingerie fashion show in four years.
The special event was held at the Manhattan Center in New York City on September 6.
Prior to the revival of this highly popular show, which began in 1995 and remained highly popular until it was suspended in 2019, a special event was held on September 6 at the Manhattan Center in New York, U.S., with a distinguished lineup on the red carpet.
Victoria’s Secret has long been popular for its extravagant shows in which select top models appeared in glittering lingerie. However, as times have shifted toward a more inclusive approach, the brand’s policy of focusing on a few models with unrealistic beauty has come under criticism for its lack of diversity and misogyny. In 2018, when Victoria’s Secret’s sales dropped dramatically, Savage X Fenty, co-founded by popular singer Rihanna, launched products for various skin colors, races, and body shapes and grew in popularity at a furious pace.
In 2019, Victoria’s Secret announced that it would be suspending its long-running and popular lingerie fashion show, and in 2021, it will launch a new line of products, including the once-popular Miranda Kerr and Jasmine Tookes. Victoria’s Secret will no longer have its “Angels,” the exclusive Victoria’s Secret models who have served as billboards for the brand, but will instead work with members from a variety of fields to “inspire positive change” through the creation of the Victoria’s Secret Collection. The Victoria’s Secret Collective was launched to “promote positive change” with members active in a variety of fields.
Among the models appearing in the show are Hailey Bieber, wife of singer Justin Bieber, and Laila Grace Moss, daughter of Kate Moss, who was a prominent figure in the supermodel boom of the 1990s, and who have been criticized by fans for wearing “parent’s coatattails” and “because they have money. On the other hand, fans were delighted to see the return of top Victoria’s Secret models such as Adriana Lima, Candice Swanepoel, Naomi Campbell, and Gigi Hadid, all of whom had shined at Victoria’s Secret. In addition to Adriana, Naomi, and Gigi, the red carpet also featured the highly popular Taylor Hill, Grace Elizabeth, and Lily Aldridge.
In addition to the models, Brooke Shields, the American actor who captivated the world in the 80’s, and Priyanka Chopra, the Indian actress and the last Miss World winner of the 20th century, also showed up with their gorgeous looks.
And after a four-year absence, the show not only resumed, but also featured a strong representation of Victoria’s Secret’s rebranding efforts. Former world No. 1-ranked tennis player Naomi Osaka, who is a member of the Victoria’s Secret Collective and recently gave birth to her first daughter in July, wore a short top and mini skirt. Although she has not played an official match since September 2022, she has just announced her intention to play in the Australian Open in January 2024.
Also scheduled to appear at the show are plus-size model Paloma Elsesser and Winnie Harlow, who has made a unique presence as a model. Winnie was diagnosed with vitiligo at the age of 4, a condition that actress Megumi Okina has also recently been diagnosed with, and has shown the world how she has built a career as a model while powerfully overcoming difficulties. The gold netted dress that Winnie wore for this event was described as “Winnie’s dress …… is amazing! and compliments have lined up on how it brings out her personality to the fullest.
The “Victoria’s Secret World Tour,” which will be available on Amazon Prime on September 26, features four artists from four different cities: London, Tokyo, Lagos, and Bogota. Each will create a show and reveal the story behind the scenes.
