On September 20, the first match of Champions League (CL) Group B was held between Arsenal (England) and PSV (Netherlands).
Arsenal returned to the “highest stage in Europe” for the first time in seven seasons.
This will be Arsenal’s first appearance in the CL since the long reign of former manager Arsene Wenger, but they will be looking to improve on that dismal record this season, having been eliminated in the round of 16 for eight consecutive years until the 2016-17 season, their last appearance in the competition. PSV, meanwhile, will be making their first appearance in the CL in five years, since the 2018-19 season. The two sides were tied in the Europa League group stage last season, and at the time, Arsenal won one game and lost one game from Arsenal’s perspective. Arsenal won 1-0 at home, while PSV’s home team had a 2-0 whitewash on PSV’s home turf.
Mikel Arteta, in his first CL match as a coach, sent his main men, including Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, and Martin Ødegaard, out onto the pitch from the start. Gabriel Martinelli, who was injured in the most recent Premier League match against Everton in the fifth round, was not available, but Leandro Trossard, who scored the game-winning goal in that match, is in the starting lineup. David Raya was in goal and Takehiro Tomiyasu started on the bench. PSV had a number of key players in the starting lineup, including Serginho Desto, Noah Lang, and Luke de Jong.
Arsenal had the first chance to score in the 8th minute, when Ødegaard, who had been looking forward in midfield, connected to the right, and Saka, who had been stretched out wide, cut in and returned the pass again. Ødegaard’s powerful left-footed shot was deflected by goalkeeper Walter Benitez, but Saka was on hand to push the ball home with his right foot to put Arsenal in front.
About 10 minutes after the first goal, Gabriel Jesús collected a clearance from his own half and sped up to pass the ball to the right. Saka carried the ball alongside him and connected with the center of the field, where Trossard was free to fire a right-footed shot into the lower right corner of the goal. Arsenal recorded a valuable extra point.
In the 38th minute, a long feed from Gabriel Magalhães found Trossard in the space behind the left flank, and he sent a simple left-footed floater into the bottom right corner. Jesús, waiting in the box, struck a powerful strike from the control, and Arsenal went into halftime with a three-goal lead.
Arteta made an early change in the second half, bringing on Reece Nelson and Tomiyasu in the 58th minute, replacing Trossard and Oleksandr Zinchenko. Tomiyasu was happy to make his CL debut.
In the 70th minute, Kai Havertz took a long feed from Ben White up front and connected with a through ball from Emile Smith-Rowe down the right flank to the center of the park. Nelson picked up the ball, exchanged passes with Smith Rowe, and passed it to the center, where Ødegaard broke free on the edge of the penalty area and struck a left-footed shot into the top corner. The ball was then passed to Smith Rowe, who passed it to the center of the park, and Ødegaard, free on the edge of the penalty area, struck it with a left-footed strike.
Time expired. Arsenal got off to a great start, winning their first home game of the CL season, and the beginning of a new era for the club. PSV, on the other hand, created some chances in the first half, but were unable to take control of the game in the second half, and started the game in the black.
The next round of the CL group stage will be held on October 4. Arsenal will face RC Reims (France) and PSV will play Sevilla (Spain) at home.
