Snowboarders from all over the world rushed to give a hug to a frustrated Iwabuchi for her brave attempt.

President Bach also visited the women’s big air final held on February 15. Iwabuchi, who had broken her left hand the day before, attempted a triple cork underflip 1260 on her third run to win a medal. Snowboarders from all over the world rushed to him to praise his brave attempt, and they formed a circle to hug a disappointed Iwabuchi. The scene was one of the most famous of the Beijing Olympics.

Moved by the event, President Bach presented Iwabuchi with a white box through an official. It seemed to be a special Olympics model from the Swiss watch manufacturer Swatch, and Iwabuchi received it and said, “I didn’t think that (President Bach) was watching me, so I was happy to receive it at ……. I’m happy to receive it,” he said with a smile.

At the press conference on Friday, the 68-year-old from Germany, who was still in a state of excitement, mentioned again, “It was a scene that symbolized the Olympic spirit,” and added, “Iwabuchi made a great jump at the end, even though he had broken his arm the day before. Everyone in the crowd gasped and was moved. All the other athletes ran out and hugged her as if they were protecting her. I’ll never forget that scene,” he said.

The event was won by Anna Gasser of Austria, followed by Zoi Sadovskisinotto of New Zealand in second place and Kokomo Murase of Japan in third place to take the bronze medal.
