Paris Saint-Germain’s (PSG) Brazilian FW Neymar, who was sentenced to prison for transfer irregularities, is no longer being prosecuted or arrested in a lawsuit in Brazil. Spain’s Mundo Deportivo reported.
Neymar has been in the news for an alleged fraudulent deal in 2013 when he moved from Santos to Barcelona.
Barcelona was said to have paid €57.1 million for the transfer, with €40 million going to Neymar’s family and €17.1 million) to Santos.
However, an investigation revealed that there was at least 83.3 million euros in transfer fees. The situation was triggered by a lawsuit filed by DIS, an investment fund that held some of Neymar’s rights at the time.
The court case implicates Neymar, his parents, and former Barcelona presidents Sandro Rosay and Josep Maria Bartomeu in the fraud, and Rosay and Bartomeu will be charged with fraud. And Neymar is likely to be sentenced to two years of imprisonment and fined 10 million euros in a trial that will begin in October.
Meanwhile, Neymar is also suspected of tax evasion in Brazil. Neymar is accused of evading taxes in Brazil without filing the correct tax returns, which are for amounts paid by Barcelona between 2011 and 2013.
Brazilian tax authorities imposed a fine of R$188 million, but Neymar appealed repeatedly. The amount was significantly reduced.
Neymar’s lawyer argued against the amount charged, claiming that he paid taxes in Spain when he played for Barcelona. They stated that the amount should be deducted.
In the meantime, the Federal Court of the Third State of Brazil ordered a stay of “criminal proceedings in the place of investigation. It ruled that there was insufficient evidence to offer a plea bargain. Neymar won a writ of habeas corpus, the court said.
However, this is separate from the issue being sued in Spain. A trial in October, a month before the Qatar World Cup, is inevitable at this point. What will be the outcome of this one?
