In the first round of the World Cup Soccer Tournament in Qatar, France (ranked 4th in the world), aiming to win the tournament again, defeated Poland (ranked 26th in the world) 3-1 to make it to the top eight for the third consecutive tournament.
Giroud became the all-time leading scorer for the French national team with his 52nd goal.
The French team had a decisive opportunity in the 29th minute of the first half from a cross by Dembele, who slid in and touched the ball past Giroud. The ball went wide as Giroud slid in. Poland put pressure on the visitors by defending from the front. FW Lewandowski scored a goal with a penalty kick after a video decision in the closing minutes, but it was too little too late.
France will play the winner of the quarterfinal match between England (ranked 5th in the world) and Senegal (ranked 18th in the world) on November 10.
