Actress Mary Alice, best known for her role as Oracle in “The Matrix Revolutions,” has died at the age of 85.

The NYPD confirmed that Alice died of natural causes.

 

Alice also appeared in Spike Lee’s “Malcolm X” and Brian De Palma’s “Bonfire of the Vanities.” She led the original Broadway cast of August Wilson’s “Fences”.

Alice is a Tony Award winner and won the 1987 Best Leading Actress Award for her role as Rose opposite James Earl Jones in Fences. After being recognized for her stellar performance in Wilson’s classic play, she began working with some of the most celebrated writers of the 20th century, collaborating with Lee and De Palma shortly thereafter.

 

Alice also won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 1993 for her role as Marguerite Peck in “I’ll Fly Away,” and in 1995 she received her second Tony nomination for her portrayal of Dr. Bessey Delany in Emily Mann’s “Having Our Say,” and for Outstanding Leading Actress in a Play. Five years later, she was inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame, and in 2001, after the death of the first Oracle actress, Gloria Foster, Alice was best known for her role as the Oracle in “The Matrix Revolutions.”

 

Alice’s death was confirmed by the NYPD on Thursday, July 28, according to a Deadline report; the NYPD has also confirmed that Alice died of natural causes.
