The Padres officially announced on August 2 (local time) that they have acquired outfielder Juan Soto and infielder Josh Bell from the Nationals in a trade that was the biggest highlight of this summer’s trade market. In exchange, six players, including infielder Luke Voit and other youngsters, will move to the Nationals.
Along with Soto, Bell, who is batting .301 with 14 home runs this season, also goes to the Padres.
The 23-year-old Soto made his major league debut in 2018 as a 19-year-old and won the leadoff spot in 2020. This season was his second consecutive All-Star Game selection and his first win in the Home Run Derby. In 101 games this season, he hit .246 with 21 home runs, 46 runs batted in, and six stolen bases, and during July, the Nationals reportedly made him a 15-year, $440 million (58.2 billion yen) offer to stay, the first in major league history to exceed $400 million, but he declined. Bell has also hit .301 with 14 home runs so far this season.
In addition to Voit, who has hit 13 home runs in 82 games for the Padres, infielder CJ Abrams, pitcher Mackenzie Gore, and promising young outfielders Robert Hassell III, James Wood, and pitcher Harlin Susana have joined the Nationals. It was a big 2-for-6 trade, including Bell.
The Padres also acquired left-hander Josh Hader, who has 125 saves, in a large 1-for-4 trade. The Padres are aggressively reinforcing their pitching and hitting, and will be a strong reinforcement for Yu Darvish.
