If they trade Shohei Ohtani, the Angels can expect a lot in return.

About a dozen teams, including the Yankees and Padres, presented trade scenarios, but owner Art Moreno would not even listen to the offers and did not discuss them. Moreno’s explanation to his men was one word: “With Trout and Rendon injured, we can’t trade Otani.

Heyman explains that the Angels now need to start over. Mike Trout has a complete no-trade clause in his contract, and Anthony Rendon is still hard to trade because of injury after injury after injury. On the other hand, if they trade Ohtani, they can expect to get a lot in return, such as Juan Soto, who has now been traded from the Nationals to the Padres. Leaders of other teams say the Angels should think more seriously.

One team leader said, “Ohtani will be out the door (FA rights) in 14 months. MLB baseball insiders believe Otani wants to win. But the Angels have the contracts of Trout and Rendon to contend with, and Ohtani’s arbitration rights would bump his salary from the current $5 million to perhaps $35 million or so next season. However, the Moreno owners do not want to pay the luxury tax. Hence, it is very difficult for this team to win in the near future.
