Halle Bailey is a member of the sister duo Chloe and Halley (Chloe x Halle), which was also nominated for a 2018 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. While her selection as Ariel made headlines when she was chosen for the role, the original animated version of Ariel is portrayed as completely Caucasian, with white skin, red hair, and blue eyes. Hashtags such as “#NotMyAriel” were created to express their dissatisfaction with Bailey’s casting.

The Little Mermaid” finished filming in July 2021 after several postponements due to the spread of the new coronavirus. The U.S. release is scheduled for 2023.

In a recent interview with Variety magazine, Bailey touched on her reasons for taking on the role and the pride her grandparents took in representing their community through her acting. She said, “I want the little girl in me and the little girls like me who are watching to know that they are special and should be a princess in every way. There is no reason why I shouldn’t be. I needed that reassurance. Then I would feel confident and believe in myself. It changes everything.

As the film and television industry attempts to better portray modern society, the controversy of casting backlash like Bailey’s is unfortunately becoming more and more common. However, it is clear that Bailey had good reason for his decision to take on this role. Little is known about the film, but expectations are high for Bailey’s red-headed looks, the latest contemporary story, and more.
