Rina Sawayama arrives in Japan to perform at Summer Sonic

Singer-songwriter Rina Sawayama, who was born in Niigata Prefecture and currently lives and works in the United Kingdom, where she moved to when she was five years old, reported on Instagram that she has returned to Japan to perform at Summer Sonic 2022, which will be held this weekend at venues in Tokyo and Osaka.

Rina used to travel back and forth between the UK and Japan frequently, but when Front Row editorial staff interviewed her in June this year, she said that she had not seen her family for about two years due to the new coronavirus pandemic, so this is her first time back to Japan in three years.

Rina revealed on Instagram that she celebrated her 32nd birthday here in Japan on August 16, writing the following. I had the slay*est birthday in Japan! We went on a crazy mountain hike with mosquito bites, it was very foggy and about 27 degrees and crazy windy (and also very dark?). We went to a shopping mall and had some chilled Chinese noodles made by hand. I feel so lucky to have made it to 32 in good health! Thanks for the birthday message!” *Slay is a word that means “slay” in Japanese.

Slay” is a word that Rina uses a lot, and she explains its meaning: “It means ‘you’re in control’ or ‘you’re the best,’ basically, it means ‘you’re on a roll. Basically, it means, “You’re on a roll. Also, “slay” is a word used in the queer community. When someone does something great, we say ‘slay,'” she revealed in an interview.
