According to Kevin Acy of the San Diego Union-Tribune, a local newspaper, the Padres are interested in starting negotiations with Yu Darvish to extend his contract. Darvish, now 36, is currently under a six-year, $126 million contract, and next season is the last year of the six-year deal. It is unclear how many more years he intends to remain active and how many more years he plans to play in the majors.
If Darvish wishes to continue playing in the majors, at least the Padres are open to extending his contract.
Darvish has pitched 194 2/3 innings in 30 starts this season, posting a 16-8 record with a 3.10 ERA and 197 strikeouts. He was a FA from the Dodgers in the 2017 offseason and signed a six-year, $126 million contract with the Cubs. He will be traded to the Padres in the offseason of 2020, the final year of his contract, for a salary of $18 million.
Given his age (36), even if a contract extension is reached, it will not be for a long term and will likely be in the form of an addition to his current contract for one or two seasons. The Padres have Sean Manaea and Mike Clevinger becoming FAs after this season, and Nick Martinez could also become a FA without exercising his player option. Even though they signed Joe Musgrove to a five-year, $100 million contract, Blake Snell will also be a FA after next season, and an extension with Darvish fits the team situation in terms of a head start on starting pitchers.
Darvish has played 10 seasons in the Majors, winning the most games once, striking out the most batters, and being selected to the All-Star Game five times. If he signs a contract extension with the Padres, he could break Hideo Nomo’s record for the most wins by a Japanese player (123 wins). The future of the Padres, including Darvish’s own intentions, will be closely watched.
