Could Shohei Ohtani be traded to the Mets? The New York broadcast station SNY reported that it is “possible” if ace right-handed pitcher Jacob deGrom is washed up, and the U.S. sports magazine Sports Illustrated also mentioned a move to the Mets. The report also suggests a 1-for-4 trade for Ohtani if deGrom becomes a FA.

The Angels “could orchestrate a blockbuster trade.”

Predicts that “Ohtani’s contract expires in 2023, but the Angels might orchestrate a blockbuster trade this offseason or before the trade deadline.” Noting that deGrom, the Mets’ ace right-hander, has a big five-year, $137.5 million contract starting in 2019, but has an “opt-out” right to opt out of his contract and become a FA this offseason, “If we can’t get our ace back, Ootani is a strong plan B. If we can’t get our ace back, Otani could be a strong plan B.” He pointed out the possibility of a one-for-four trade.

The exchange partners mentioned were catcher Francisco Alvarez, third baseman Brett Baty, center fielder Alex Ramirez, and center fielder Ronny Mauricio; Alvarez is ranked No. 1 overall in MLB’s official prospect rankings, Baty is No. 19, Ramirez is No. 85, and Mauricio is the team’s sixth-best prospect. The 20-year-old Alvarez, who appeared in five games in the majors in the final part of the season, is described as “probably one of the most aggressive and exciting prospects, even if he doesn’t play the premier position of catcher.” The article also mentions that GM Billy Eppler is a former Angels GM who was instrumental in acquiring Otani.

Ohtani has agreed to a salary of $30 million (¥4.546 billion) with the Angels for next season. That’s a high price tag for a one-year rental, but owner Steve Cohen has enough money in his pocket to keep Otani even if he becomes an FA in the 2023 offseason. Cohen would consider acquiring Ohtani for his superstar status and also for the entertainment aspect of being able to pitch and hit at a high level,” the article predicts. On the other hand, “The Mets need to sell farm players to acquire the megastar. He is an attractive player, but it makes more sense to wait a year and acquire him as a FA.
