Former U.S. President Donald Trump had hoped to ride the predicted “red wave” of the November 8 midterm elections (a major victory for the Republican Party, which uses red as its symbolic color) and give momentum to his run for the next presidential election. However, the results of the election revealed that the party’s number of seats won was sluggish and that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a rival within the party, had made a major breakthrough.
Trump was “furious” over the election results on the morning of November 9, “yelling at everybody.”
In elections held amid a slump in the approval rating of the incumbent president and high inflation, the opposition party is usually expected to win a large number of seats. In this midterm election, however, the Republicans are expected to take back the House of Representatives from the Democrats, but they are not expected to make a significant gain in the number of seats.
Trump has been front and center in the Republican Party’s campaign, exerting influence in the primaries to select the party’s official candidates in key districts. He held rallies across the U.S. and repeatedly made unsubstantiated claims that the 2020 presidential election was rigged.
However, the candidates Trump endorsed were unsuccessful one after another, and the Democrats lost seats that had previously been held by the Republicans. Analysts and party insiders have pointed out that Trump is to blame for the poor election results.
In the race for the U.S. Senate in the battleground state of Pennsylvania, Mehmet Oz, a prominent physician who was endorsed by Trump, ran as a Republican. The Democrats thoroughly attacked him, who has no experience in public office and has lived in New Jersey for a long time, and succeeded in taking the seat away from the Republicans.
There are exceptions, however. In the U.S. Senate race in Ohio, J.D. Vance, a Trump-backed candidate, won the election. In addition, according to U.S. media estimates, the number of Republican candidates challenging the results of the 20-year presidential election is expected to rise to more than 100 winners nationwide.
Meanwhile, in the Florida gubernatorial race, DeSantis, who has strongly suggested that he will run for president in 2024, won reelection by an overwhelming margin over his opponent, solidifying his position as a strong opponent of Trump.
On the day after the election, newspapers were all reporting on DeSantis’s breakthrough. Republican supporters interviewed by AFP in Scottsdale, Arizona, voiced their preference for DeSantis over Trump.
Lisa Christopher, 60, who owns a small business, noted that “the only thing that matters to Mr. Trump is self-esteem. DeSantis knows when to push and pull, while Trump does not.”
On the morning of November 9, Trump was reportedly “furious” over the election results and “yelling at everyone,” according to CNN television reporter Jim Acosta, who spoke with an aide.
He had hinted that he might announce his candidacy for the next presidential election on November 15, but some political commentators have suggested that he might postpone the announcement.
