On November 30, the third match of Group E of the Qatar World Cup was held between Costa Rica and Germany.
The Germans won 4-2, their first win of the tournament, but were eliminated from the group for the second consecutive tournament.
The Japanese team’s first-round win over Germany overturned the assumption that Germany and Spain would be the top two teams in Group E, and all teams entered the third round with a chance of making it through.
Germany, who had not won in two games, needed to beat Costa Rica at least. The Germans will start with Kimmich at right back, who has been used in the volleyball position in the last two games, and will put pressure on Costa Rica from the start.
On the other hand, Costa Rica, who could advance even with a draw depending on the results at the other venues, will again use a back five in front of the goal and look to counter.
The Germans dominated from the start, and in the 10th minute, Raum met a dribbling Mussiara pass on the left side of the penalty area and crossed the ball to Nyabuli, who headed it into the right side of the goal.
The Germans continued to overwhelm Costa Rica by playing two backs in attack, but Costa Rica was in no hurry to concede the first goal, as they all pulled back in their own half to withstand the German offensive.
Costa Rica’s best chance came in the 43rd minute, when a long ball was mishandled by the German defenders, allowing Freel to make a substitution, but his shot from inside the area was touched by goalkeeper Neuer and deflected into the net for a corner.
With Germany leading by a goal in the second half, Germany dropped Goretzka and brought on Klosterman at right back, and moved Kimmich back into midfield, allowing Gundogan to take a higher position than in the first half.
In the 55th minute, Germany, wanting an extra goal, dropped Gündoğan and brought on Fürkrug. Costa Rica did not miss the opportunity.
In the 58th minute, Costa Rica won the ball high up the field, and Campbell headed in a cross from the right that was barely deflected by goalkeeper Neuer. Tejeda pushed the ball home to tie the game for Costa Rica, but the Germans were able to get back in front in the 61st minute.
In the 61st minute, Mussiara’s shot from the left inside the area hit the right post, and in the 62nd minute, Rüdiger’s right cross hit the right post. 66 minutes later, Mussiara’s shot hit the post again.
In the 67th minute, Germany replaced Muller and Raum with Havertz and Goetze. In the 70th minute, Waston headed home an FK from the left, Oviedo raced across the face of goal, and Vargas pushed home the spilled ball to put Costa Rica back in front.
Germany’s comeback was short-lived, but in the 73rd minute, a turn from the left bounced off Kimmich’s head and was deflected by Fürkrug into the path of Havertz, who coolly slotted home to tie the game.
In the 85th minute, Nyabuli’s cross was met by Havaerts, and in the 89th minute, Sané slipped in a floated pass from Kimmich, dropped it on his chest, and Fürkrug pushed it home to give Germany the lead for good.
The Germans won the match 4-2, their first win of the tournament, but Japan’s victory over Spain in the other Group E match left the Germans in third place on goal difference with Spain, who were level on points, and eliminated from the group for the second consecutive tournament.
