Liverpool’s first game of 2023 started with an unexpected black star.

Liverpool has won two games in a row since the league resumed. Despite a string of injuries up front, the top three continued to feature Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. This week’s matchup was against Brentford, a team that has shown good chemistry with the big clubs this season with a 2-2-1 record against the Big Six.

In the 7th minute of the match, Liverpool had a decisive chance through Salah, but Nunez was able to get past the goalkeeper. However, his shot was blocked by a covering defender and the visitors were unable to take the lead. Brentford’s goal came in the 19th minute, when Ben Mee was forced to race onto a CK and the ball hit Ibrahima Konate in the back of the net. The home side were able to move the scores level through an own goal.

Liverpool’s first goal came in the 24th minute when Kostas Zimikas had a chance to score, but goalkeeper David Raya was able to save the ball. Brentford also had goals in the 27th and 39th minutes from a CK by Joanne Wisa, but both were ruled out for offside. Brentford broke down the right flank in the 42nd minute, and Wisa again headed in a cross. This time it was a genuine goal, and the home team extended their lead to two points at the end of the first half.

Liverpool’s two goal cushion was short-lived, and Jurgen Klopp made a surprise move at the start of the second half, as the home team’s goalkeeper, Philisir van Dijk, was forced off the bench. Jurgen Klopp made three substitutions, including the injured Filsil van Dijk, to try to turn the tide. In the 50th minute, Chamberlain met Trent Alexander-Arnold’s left-footed cross to close the gap to one goal.

Brentford held firm and in the 84th minute, Brian Mbeumo won a race from a long ball. He coolly won a one-on-one with his left foot and scored a valuable goal to put Liverpool ahead.

The match ended as it did. Liverpool’s half-time shock therapy failed to help, and the first game of 2023 got off to an unexpectedly black start. Brentford, on the other hand, followed in the footsteps of Manchester U and Manchester C to once again put dirt on the big clubs, winning their second straight league game.

Next up for Brentford is an FA Cup third-round match against West Ham on the 7th, followed by a home match against Bournemouth on the 14th. Liverpool will play Wolverhampton in the FA Cup 3rd round on the 7th, followed by an away game against Brighton on the 14th.
