The National Basketball Association (NBA) revealed on April 13 that the trophy awarded to the regular-season Most Valuable Player (MVP) will be named the Michael Jordan Trophy, named after the league’s legendary star.
The league revealed the new designs for the six trophies, which will be named after league pioneers, including the Michael Jordan Trophy.
The trophies will be awarded to winners after the upcoming season.
Jordan won six Finals titles with the Chicago Bulls and was named regular-season MVP five times in his 15-year career. (Kareem Abdul-Jabba) six times, tying him for second place on the all-time list.
Jabba’s name is attached to the Social Justice Champion award, given to the player who has contributed the most to social justice.
The other trophies were “Hakeem Olajuwon Trophy” for Best Defensive Player, “Wilt Chamberlain Trophy” for Best Newcomer, “John Havlicek Trophy” for Best Sixth Man, and “George Mikan Trophy” for the Best Sixth Man and “George Mikan Trophy” for the Most Improved Player.
In addition, it was announced that the newly created Clutch Player Trophy will be named after Jerry West. West has played in nine NBA Finals and is the only player ever to be named Finals MVP by a losing team.
