The French film “Jeanne du Barry” is Johnny Depp’s (59) return to the screen, and new promotional images have recently been released.

After losing a lawsuit against his ex-wife Amber Heard in 2020, Johnny Depp announced that he would be stepping down from the film, and it was reported that he would play King Louis XV in a new film directed by a French director in January 2022.

A scene from the film featuring Johnny as Louis XV and other scenes were shown for the first time.

In November 2020, Johnny Depp dropped out of the third “Fantastic Beasts” movie after losing a defamation lawsuit against The Sun, a British newspaper that reported allegations of domestic violence against his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard. A petition campaign by Johnny’s fans demanded his return to the film.

In January 2022, the US media outlet Variety reported that Johnny will play King Louis XV of France in the next film by French actress, director, and screenwriter Maïwenn (Maïwenn, 46). He announced that filming would begin in the summer of the same year.

In April, a defamation trial against Amber’s contributions to the film was initiated in the U.S., and Johnny won the case. Johnny then continued his activities as a musician, touring Europe and recording with Jeff Beck.

Then, in August, the French production company “Why Not Productions” premiered a teaser for the new film “Jeanne du Barry,” directed by Maïwenn, which showed Johnny in a blindfolded profile dressed as Louis XV.

The film, which marks Johnny’s return to the screen, tells the story of Madame du Barry, who became the last official concubine after the death of Madame de Pompadour, the official mistress of King Louis XV of France, and served at the court of Versailles. She was born into a poor family, but used her intelligence to enter the world of society and captivate the king. The role of Madame du Barry is played by Maïwenn, who also directed the film.

According to the U.S. media outlet “Deadline,” the film was shot for 11 weeks from July 26 last year at a chateau, the Palace of Versailles, and studios in the suburbs of Paris.

On January 3, local time, the official SNS of the French media “Première” released new promotional images of the film. It was the first time that a scene from the film starring Johnny and Maïwenn was shown.

The released image shows the two sitting in front of a dinner table in the palace, with a sad-looking Madame du Barry (Mywen) leaning against Louis XV (Johnny) with her arm around him.

The publicly released photo shows Madame du Barry (Mywen) with a sad expression on her face as the two sit in front of a dinner table in the palace, with Louis XV (Johnny) leaning in close with his arm around her.

Other scenes on the media outlet’s Instagram also show Johnny dressed as Louis XV, wearing a feathered tricorn hat and standing with a royal scepter, and surrounded by nobles at a ball in the palace.

Netflix joined the project last summer, but a release date for the film has not been set as of yet. There has been talk of the film premiering at the Cannes Film Festival this May, and if it comes to fruition, it is expected to be released by the end of 2023.
