Archewell Audio, the production company of British Prince Harry (38) and Princess Meghan (41), announced that it is terminating its partnership with music distribution giant Spotify.
The next day, a Spotify executive criticized the couple, calling them “a fucking fraud.
Although Prince Harry and his wife signed a major $20 million contract with Spotify to produce Princess Meghan’s podcast show “Archetypes” in 2020, they have only distributed season one, which consisted of 12 episodes, and the contract was terminated by mutual agreement before season two could be produced. On June 16, it was announced that the contract was terminated by mutual agreement before the production of season 2.
The reason for the contract termination was not disclosed, although the joint statement said, “We are proud of the series we produced together. However, since the termination of the contract with the couple was announced shortly after Spotify announced that it would lay off 200 employees in order to restructure its podcast division, it was pointed out that the failure of the Queen’s program to generate the expected revenue may have been a factor.
In the midst of all this, Bill Simmons, founder of The Ringer, a sports-related podcast program and head of innovation and monetization at Spotify, mentioned on his show that he wanted to be part of the negotiations for Meghan and Harry to leave Spotify and the termination of the couple’s contract. He said that “this is the kind of podcast you should start with a fucking fraud,” and jokingly criticized the couple for “telling the prince on a drunken night about the Zoom conference that helped them with the idea for the podcast.
The couple reportedly hopes to distribute their content on another platform.
