The 21st match of the Premier League season took place on March 21, with Liverpool (9th) and Chelsea (10th) playing each other.
A matchup of two prestigious clubs that have fallen into a slump this season.
Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp, who has lost two games in a row, started Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson on the bench, while James Milner and Stefan Vicetić started. Meanwhile, Chelsea coach Graham Potter, who won his first game of the year the previous week, went into the game with a 4-2-3-1, with new signing Mihailo Mudrikh starting on the bench.
Three minutes into the game, Chelsea had the decisive goal. Benoit Baziaşire’s deflected left-footed corner kick was well connected, and Thiago Silva’s shot hit the left post. Kai Hafelez pushed the ball over, but Hafelez was offside and the first goal was cancelled out.
After a back-and-forth battle in midfield, Chelsea came close again in the 32nd minute with another set piece. Hakim Ziyek won a free kick on the left flank, and his high-speed cross between the goalkeeper and the defensive line was headed in by T. Silva, only to be denied by a great save from goalkeeper Alisson.
Liverpool also came close to scoring several times, but no decisive scoring chances came their way. The first half ended scoreless, with no goals scored. In the second half, the home team continued to dominate, with Chelsea replacing Lewis Hall with Mudryk in the 55th minute.
In the 64th minute, Mudryk put on a show. After a one-two pass with Conor Gallagher, Mudrikh made his way into the penalty area and took a fine touch in the crowded area to evade his opponent. He then swung a left-footed shot from the left towards the near post, but the ball just missed the side-netting. Mudryk continued to show his presence in the game, but each chance he had was just a step short of a goal.
The game ended 0-0, with neither side able to find a way to score. The teams shared one point each. Liverpool will play Wolverhampton on February 4, and Chelsea will play Fulham on February 3.
