Avatar” Sequel Surpasses $2 Billion at the World Box Office

James Cameron’s science fiction film “Avatar: The Way of Water” has surpassed the $2 billion mark at the worldwide box office. The U.S. entertainment magazine Deadline reported.

The film has topped the box office for six consecutive weeks since its release last December.

CNN has reached out to Disney, the film’s producer, for comment on the $2 billion mark.

Way of Water is a sequel to the 2009 blockbuster Avatar. According to movie information website Box Office Mojo, Avatar still holds the top spot in the all-time box office rankings.

Cameron’s 1997 film “Titanic” also topped $2 billion at the box office. Only three other films have exceeded $2 billion: “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” (2015), “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018), and “Avengers: Endgame” (2019).

Cameron was the only director to have worked on six films that grossed $2 billion at the box office and three of the six best-selling films of all time.

Cameron plans to release at least three Avatar sequels in the future.
