English businessman Jim Ratcliffe has been named as a rival.

On February 14, it was reported in the media that Shaikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar (“Emir Tamim”), is planning to bid 4 billion pounds (approximately 646 billion yen) to buy Manchester U. The Glazer family, which owns the club, had issued a statement last November 22 that it was considering selling its stake in the club.

The deadline for bidding for the Manchester U acquisition was 10:00 p.m. on February 17. However, while a takeover by Emir Tamim was seen as definitive, Jim Ratcliffe, an English businessman who has been an avowed Manchester U fan since his childhood, came forward as a rival. According to Sky Sports, the Ineos Group, which Ratcliffe founded in 1998, made an offer just before the 22:00 deadline for bids. The possibility that Mr. Ratcliffe would make a bid had been reported in the media for some time, but at the last minute he decided to join the “Red Devil” in the takeover bidding.

The final price for the acquisition of Manchester U is said to be as high as 6 billion pounds (approximately 970 billion yen). Who will win the fierce competition, the English billionaire or the Emir of Qatar?
