The British royal family, Prince William and Princess Catherine, were officially conferred their titles earlier this month.
The former monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, passed away last September.
Her eldest son, then Prince Charles, immediately acceded to the throne, but what was the reason why it took several months for Prince William and his wife to be officially conferred the title?
The Gazette, a government publication, announced on Friday, February 24 that Prince William had been conferred several titles, including “Duke of Cornwall, Duke of Rothesay, Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Carrick, Earl of Strathern, Baron Renfrew, and Baron Carrickfergus” as of Monday, February 13. It is believed that it has taken some time to get to this point, as the awarding of these titles requires various procedures, including the approval of the King’s letters patent.
In addition, the social networking accounts of Prince William and Princess William were changed to the new titles, “The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge,” immediately after the Queen’s death last year. The title of Duke of Cornwall is usually held by the eldest son of the monarch.
The titles “Earl of Strathern” and “Countess of Strathern” are the Scottish appellations for the couple, and were given to them by then Queen Elizabeth when they were married in 2011.
King Charles will officially become monarch at his coronation on May 6.
Former BBC correspondent Jenny Bond said in an interview last month that the coronation “will be a ceremony rooted in long-standing tradition and pomp, but reflecting the role of the monarch today and looking to the future,” adding that it is sure to be a major event. It is sure to be a big event,” he said, adding, “In terms of the number of state guests in attendance, it may be bigger than the Queen’s funeral.
