Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of HBO Max, has filed a lawsuit against Paramount Global over the popular American satirical cartoon “South Park,” Variety reports.
Paramount violated its contract by directing “South Park” specials and other content to its own Paramount+ platform.
According to the report, Paramount Global was sued by Warner after it reneged on part of a $500 million licensing agreement set for 2019 regarding streaming rights to episodes of “South Park.” The lawsuit, recently filed in New York State Supreme Court, alleges that Paramount violated the agreement by directing “South Park” specials and other content to its Paramount+ platform.
Warner is defending its rights under the licensing agreement it set up and is “bringing this action to recover hundreds of millions of dollars in damages” caused by the fraud, the suit says.
South Park” is a long-running show that has aired on Paramount Global’s Comedy Central cable channel for more than 25 years. The enduring animated comedy by Trey Parker and Matt Stone is in its 26th season and has released more than 300 episodes.
The lawsuit claims that when HBO Max won the bid for the streaming rights to “South Park,” it did so with the assurance that it would deliver three new seasons of 10 episodes each. However, only two episodes of the first of those seasons were delivered, and only six episodes of the second, the suit alleges, and HBO Max understands that the third season will also consist of six episodes, for a total of 14 episodes in the three seasons.
The lawsuit alleges that the new episodes are worth far more than the old episodes and that HBO Max is therefore dramatically overpaying the library.
In this era of intense streaming battles, the lawsuit and future trends will be closely watched.
