At the 95th Academy Awards ceremony on 12 March local time, Ke Huy Quan successfully won the Best Supporting Actor award for Everything Everywhere All at Once. Born Chinese-Vietnamese, his family emigrated to the USA when he was a child and he made his screen debut in 1984 in the film Indiana Jones: Legend of the Magic Palace. He later appeared in The Goonies and became popular as a child actor.

However, he later took a break from acting due to the lack of film opportunities for Asian actors. He worked as a stunt co-ordinator and assistant director. Then, in 2021, he made a full return to acting in Everything Everywhere All at Once.

This time, at the age of 51, Ke Huy Quan won his first long-desired Oscar. He also became the first actor of Vietnamese descent to win a Best Supporting Actor award. As soon as he went on stage, he gave a tearful speech of thanks.

“My mom is 84 years old and she’s at home watching. Mom, I just won an Oscar,” Quan said accepting the award. “My journey started on a boat, I spent a year in a refugee camp, and somehow, I ended up here, on Hollywood’s biggest stage. They say, stories like this only happen in the movies. I cannot believe it’s happening to me. This—this is the American dream!”

‘Thank you so much, Academy, for giving me this once-in-a-lifetime honour. I thank my mother for all the sacrifices she made to get me here. To my brother David, who reminds me every day to take care of myself. I love you. Thank you Ken for supporting me through everything I’ve been through, A24, Daniels, Jonathan, Jamie, Michelle and my lifelong brother Jeff Cohen from The Goonies.”

‘Thank you to the love of my life, my wife Echo. Every month, every year, for 20 years, you told me that one day my time would come. A dream is something you have to believe in. I almost gave up, but please, everyone, keep the dream alive. Thank you! Thank you so much for making me feel so welcome. I love you. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you so much!”

Ke Huy Quan will be appearing in the upcoming Disney Plus drama Loki season 2 and American Born Chinese. His breakthrough drama, in which he continued to believe in his dream, has been an inspiration to many people.
