Matty took the stage at the Good Vibes Festival in the capital city of Kuala Lumpur.

There, he gave a speech condemning Malaysia’s policies and said that it was a “mistake” to book this show. He also walked up to bassist Ross MacDonald and gave him a long kiss. After this, they were escorted off the stage and said, “We gotta go. Now we’ve been expelled from Kuala Lumpur,” Matty commented at the end.

The Good Vibes Festival then issued a statement. Malaysia’s Ministry of Communications and Digital informed fans that the three-day event had been canceled due to “Matty’s controversial actions and statements.” The weekend lineup was scheduled to include other notable artists such as Daniel Caesar, The Strokes, The Kid Laroi, and Ty Dollar Sign.

And various festival-goers have been speaking out online in response to the uproar.

One TikToker uploaded a video showing the audience in what could only be described as a stunned state after Matty’s speech.

@nishaanggun WARNING: loud & vulgar. upset to say the least. #goodvibesfestival2023 #the1975inmalaysia #matthealy ♬ original sound – Anggun

The clip, which has been viewed more than 3.7 million times as of the day after the video was posted, shows attendees speaking in confusion, saying that Matty’s remarks “left me with nothing to do but go home. ‘I paid for three days of the festival to be here!’ TikToker said in the video.

The crowd then booed the stage, with some chanting “Refund!” and some were shown chanting, “Refund!

Another video shared by other TikTokers shows more footage of Matty’s speech. Matty said, “Everyone …… was at a music festival with a lot of local and international artists. He only came for a 30 minute show and had everything cancelled, including the next two days. Honestly, he ruined everything,” the caption of the video reads.

@banubinoGuys it was a music festival with a lot of other local and international artist in the lineup. He came for only a 30 mins show and got everything cancelled, including the next 2 days. His action was in a very distasteful way (PDA, smoking, drinking, spitting and vomiting on stage, and smashed the festival’s drone) and wrong time and place. Honestly, he ruined it for everyone.♬ original sound – banubino

Some on Twitter said Matty should have been more aware of Malaysian culture and laws. One user wrote: “Wow, thanks The 1975, it just got so hard for Malaysia to host any more international concerts.”

Another user, who identifies himself as queer Malaysian, tweeted that Matty’s actions went against the movement the country’s queer community is making for their rights.

‘Let me be clear. Matty and his band mates are all wealthy white males with nothing to lose by what they did. At best? They only lost listeners from Malaysia and a little bit of income.””Malaysian queers have worked hard to campaign for their rights,” Matty said, “and by putting us in the spotlight, he has done something that puts all of our efforts at risk.” He commented.
