In social networking services used by many people, such as TikTok, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) lawmakers have put together a proposal calling for the creation of a system that includes consideration of service suspension if it is used to manipulate information.

On Monday (27 March), a group of MPs, including Liberal Democratic Party member of the House of Representatives Norihiro Nakayama, gave an interview to Reuters.

They stated that they would compile a proposal by the end of April on the establishment of a system to take measures such as suspending services when fake information is transmitted via social networking services such as TikTok.

TikTok is a video application funded by China, and many legislators in the US have raised concerns about its data collection, content censorship and impact on children’s mental health.

In an interview, Norihiro Nakayama said that if a political party in a certain country sends out messages that are malicious and intentionally influential, they should consider shutting down the service immediately, and that “making it clear that the service can be shut down will deter the app operators and help the 17 million This will lead to a sense of security for the 17 million users in Japan”, he continued.

According to Nakayama, the proposal does not target any specific platform.

Currently, the use of social media such as TikTok is banned in Japan on the terminals of public offices that handle confidential information.

Nakayama said further regulation should be considered after examining data handling and other operations, and that it is necessary to ensure that outsiders have a good grasp of how data is being handled when concerns are raised.

In recent weeks, a number of western governments and institutions have decided to ban TikTok, including the UK Parliament, the Dutch and Belgian administrations and the New Zealand Parliament.
