According to a statement issued by the San Francisco Police Department to ET magazine, at around 2:35 am local time on 4 April, a report of a stabbing was received.

Officers responded to the scene and found Mr Lee, who had been stabbed, in distress and took him into custody on the spot.

Officers immediately called paramedics to the scene and Mr Lee was then taken to a local hospital. However, he was ‘fatally wounded’ and life-saving measures by paramedics and medical personnel were unsuccessful.

According to the police, the matter is currently being investigated by a homicide team. So far, no arrests have been made and the perpetrators are believed to be at large. Police did not identify Mr Lee as the victim, but Joshua Goldbard, CEO of MobileCoin, the virtual currency company he worked for, acknowledged his death and issued a statement.

‘Our dear friend and colleague Bob Lee passed away yesterday at the age of 43, surrounded by his loving family and a close group of friends and collaborators. Bob was a truly powerful and out-of-this-world wonderful person” and “Bob was the real deal. He was someone who understood the world in a way I could never understand. He was the poster child for dreams and whatever he imagined, no matter how crazy, came true. Bob was someone who was made for a new world.”

Lee’s profile on LinkedIn describes him as “former Chief Technology Officer of Square, creator of the Cash App and investor in SpaceX and Clubhouse”, among other things.
