Two former teachers at Donda Academy, a school founded by Kanye West, have prosecuted Kanye for wrongfully dismissing them. In addition to the employment complaint, the teachers have surprised the public by revealing a number of bizarre rules and sloppy school management within the academy.

Donda Academy is an unaccredited private Christian school founded by Kanye West in 2022. Open to students from kindergarten to grade 12, the academy, located in Simi Valley, California, was opened by Kanye with the aim of continuing the legacy of Kanye’s late mother and educator, Donda West.

According to the Academy’s official website, the school’s mission is to “provide a world-class education that emphasises sustainability, creativity, critical thinking and problem solving, including rigorous required courses, to prepare students to become the next generation of leaders, thinkers and innovators (innovators)”, according to Forbes, Tuition fees are USD 15,000 (approximately USD 2.15 million) per year.

Many of the students were celebrity children, but Kanye’s four children with ex-wife Kim Kardashian did not attend the school due to Kim’s wishes.

The plaintiffs in the case are a mother and daughter who were employed as teachers at the school with their parents. They were dismissed by Kanye last month for violating the terms and conditions, but have now decided to sue, claiming that the dismissal was racially discriminatory and unfair towards African-American women. And the trial has brought to light a series of facts about Donda Academy’s sloppy school management, which until now had been largely unknown to the outside world.

According to the plaintiffs, ‘all classes were held on the ground floor because Kanye was afraid of the stairs’, the school doors were locked from the outside and only sushi was served for lunch every day. The use of forks and other eating utensils was not permitted and the rule was that students sat on the floor during lunch. No cleaning service or school nurse was employed, and medicines in the academy were either uncontrolled or out of date.

Students were told that they were only allowed to wear black all over, with designs specified by Kanye, and were not allowed to wear Nike and Adidas, which Kanye had a contract with for a time as a designer. The two also claimed that bullying was rampant at the school due to the lack of strict student guidance standards, and that there was racial discrimination against teachers.

The plaintiff, who had always been a fan of Kanye, said: ‘I still love his music and I will not deny his talent. His vision for the school sounds great on paper, but in reality it is pure chaos and revolt. It was as if the asylum was run by the patients”. The plaintiff’s lawyer added: “It is clear that Kanye West is not good at running his school, just as he is not good at managing his life, either in his personal life or in his career”.

Kanye was banned from the fashion world in 2022 as a result of his repeated anti-Semitic comments, when his contracts with Adidas and Gap were terminated and he was publicly disassociated from fashion figures who were close to Kanye, such as Balenciaga and Anna Wintour. In the same year, Tamar Andrews, a Jewish educator who worked at the Donda Academy, resigned to protest against Kanye’s anti-Semitic comments; on 27 October 2022, the Academy announced its sudden closure, only to quickly reopen and cause chaos.
