The Little Mermaid has been hailed as “the best live-action film in Disney’s history”.

Disney’s latest film, The Little Mermaid, which opens in the US on Friday 26 May, is a commemorative live-action adaptation of the original 1989 US release of the animated classic by the staff and cast who carry on the Disney legacy in 2023, the centenary of the Walt Disney Company. The film is a landmark production.

The world premiere was held in Los Angeles on 8 May (US local time), and critics who saw the film ahead of others posted reviews on social media. Disney has made many classic animated films into live-action films, including Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast and Mulan, but this Little Mermaid, directed by Rob Marshall, has been praised as “the best live-action film in Disney’s history”.

There has also been a lot of praise for the new cast of original characters, including Melissa McCarthy, who plays Eartha, and Davide Diggs, who voices Sebastian, but one of the most notable accolades has been for Halle Bailey, who plays the main character, Ariel, with The film’s theme song, “Part 2”, was sung in advance of its release. Ahead of the film’s release, a music clip of the theme song ‘Part of Your World’ was released, and Halle has already proven his performance skills, but many people have commented that he is perfect for the role, such as “perfect as Ariel”.

Since her casting, Halle has received backlash from some people for being black, but Buzzfeed’s Terry Carter Jr. who has seen the film said, “She embodies the Disney princess, and brown-skinned girls will see her portrayal and have bigger They will dream bigger dreams’, tweeting that he praised Halle’s portrayal of Ariel as enhancing the representation of black women.

Disney’s live-action production is magical, emotional and spellbinding. Rob Marshall has directed the best live-action film in Disney’s history. The beautiful music by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Alan Menken shimmers. Harry Bailey is tremendous, of course! And Melissa McCarthy is the coolest Eartha.

‘The Little Mermaid is brilliant! Rob Marshall’s masterful direction has delivered us Disney’s best live-action remake and a delightful cinematic experience. Halle Bailey is perfect as Ariel and the heart of the film. A magical adventure under the sea (UNDER THE SEA). Can’t wait to watch it again!

Zoe Rose Bryant, writer.

The live-action remake of The Little Mermaid retains the heart and soul of the story we all know and love, but takes it to new heights with a pitch-perfect performance by Halle Bailey, who never misses a note as the star that she is. She is the kind of person who was born to be on the big screen and her presence makes this new production worth watching.

Eric Davis, critic.

Disney’s The Little Mermaid is undeniably one of the better live-action adaptations. Halle Bailey’s emotional investment in Ariel is brilliant and it was chilling to watch her, while Melissa McCarthy’s Eartha and Davido Diggs’ Sebastian are the stars of every scene.

Fico Canziano (critic).

Prepare to be moved. Because The Little Mermaid is hugely wonderful. Halle Bailey is astonishing. Melissa McCarthy is heartbreaking and Prince Eric, played by Jonah Hauer-King, is beautiful. The music and singing are A-class. The delightful duo of Sebastian (Davide Diggs) and Scuttle (Oakwafina) were also lovely.

Katia Woods, writer.

The Little Mermaid is a tribute to all little girls who dream big. Halle Bailey is unmixed magic and Davide Diggs is entertaining as Sebastian.

Terry Carter Jr (Buzzfeed, USA).

Halle Bailey was born to play Ariel. She brings her enchanting voice and gentle but confident charisma to her performance in The Little Mermaid. She embodies the Disney princess and brown-skinned girls will dream bigger after seeing her portrayal.
