At the end of March, in front of Akihabara (Chiyoda-ku) station in Tokyo, many people were lined up in front of the counter of the hamburger chain McDonald’s at lunchtime.
Among them was a group of four or five foreigners.
At first glance, they looked like tourists, but the aura emitted by the man with braided dreadlocks and a unique style was clearly different. The man’s name was Travis Scott (31). He is a popular rapper who is said to be the No. 1 rapper in the country in terms of both popularity and ability.
‘Travis had been virtually inactive since the tragedy of 5 November 2021, when 10 people died at the Astroworld Festival he organised at NRG Park in Houston, Texas, USA.
He resumed his activities last year and the purpose of his visit to Japan was to perform at the opening event of Japan’s first Jordan store, World of Flight Tokyo Shibuya, which opened on 25 March in Shibuya, Tokyo. Two days earlier, he jumped into a special live performance by female rapper Awich (Awich, 36) at “Jordan Centre Court” at Ryogoku Kokugikan.
However, he did not sing a single song, but instead shouted ‘Tokyo! ‘ and he dropped out, and Twitter went quite wild with words of condemnation for him.”
In the US, he has established himself not only as a musician but also as a fashion icon. His collaboration items with various famous brands have become explosively popular and his total assets are said to exceed USD 100 million. He is also known for his long-standing relationship with businessman and international fashion model Kylie Jenner (25). He is such a hip-hop superstar that he instantly draws crowds when he walks down the streets of the USA. Despite this, no one seems to notice him in Japan, even when standing in line in front of McDonald’s.
‘During his visit to Japan, Travis was filmed making a guerrilla appearance at Shibuya’s Scramble Crossing. He posed with a hood on and took the hood off just as people were coming and going, but no one noticed, and people just avoided him as he stood in a nioi. It seems Travis had to walk away with a wry smile on his face at the situation.”
The video was posted on Twitter and had been viewed 3.8 million times as of 7 April. It was the same in Akihabara. The group lined up at McDonald’s and waited for a while at the storefront until the take-away was ready. Travis looks great standing with the vending machine in the background, but no one seems to notice him… Whether he was relieved or disappointed by the situation is something only he knows…
