The 34th (and final) round of nine Bundesliga matches was held simultaneously on 27 May local time.
Bayern won their 11th consecutive league title in an upset, outscoring Dortmund on goal difference.
Dortmund, who entered the final round at the top of the table, were at home to ninth-placed Mainz. Mainz were two goals ahead by the 24th minute of the game, but Rafael Guerreiro scored a follow-up in the 69th minute. The visitors continued their onslaught, with Niklas Zülle equalising in the 90+6th minute, but the fightback was short-lived. The game ended in a 2-2 draw, with Dortmund moving up to 71 points.
Second-placed Bayern, who needed a win to turn things around, travelled to 10th-placed Cologne, where they took the lead in the eighth minute through Kingsley Coman’s stunning strike, but were unable to add to their tally after that, going behind on penalties in the 80th minute. However, Jamal Musiala scored a priceless winner in the 89th minute to make it 2-1. Bayern, with 71 points, were ahead of Dortmund on goal difference and secured their 11th consecutive league title in the reverse fixture.
Union Berlin, in fourth place at the end of the previous week, scored a priceless final goal in the 81st minute by Rani Khedira. They defeated Bremen 1-0 at home. Freiburg, level on points with Union Berlin, played away to eighth-placed Frankfurt. Freiburg’s Ritsu Doan, Frankfurt’s Daichi Kamata and Makoto Hasebe all started the match, with the away team taking the lead late in the first half, but Frankfurt turned the tables with late goals from Randal Kolo Muani and Erik Junior Dina Ebimbe. 1 victory.
The result means that Union Berlin have qualified for the Champions League (CL) in addition to Leipzig, who are already confirmed in third place. It was the club’s first ever qualification for the CL. Freiburg, meanwhile, are confirmed in fifth place and have qualified for the Europa League (EL). Frankfurt also qualified for the European Cup. Depending on the result of the DFB Pokal final on 3 June local time, a place in either the EL or the Conference League (ECL) will be confirmed.
The battle for remaining in the competition has also been closely watched. Bochum, who were 16th in the table at the end of the previous week, defeated sixth-placed Leverkusen 3-0, with Takuma Asano scoring one goal and assisting another in his first start. Bochum moved up to 14th in the table and confirmed their place in the first division. Despite the defeat, Leverkusen will still qualify for the European Cup competition, which will be decided depending on the result of the DFB Pokal final.
At the home of third-placed Leipzig, 17th-placed Schalke fought back from the start, but conceded a goal to Yussuf Poulsen in the 82nd minute after going 2-2 up. The home side were then beaten 2-4 by Christopher Enkunk, confirming their 17th place and relegation to the second tier in a year. 15th placed Stuttgart were at home to 13th placed Hoffenheim, and after a disastrous first goal in the 75th minute, the home team equalised five minutes later, only to see the game go in 1-1. The game ended 1-1. The result at the other venue meant that the team will now face a play-off against the third-placed team in the second division. Stuttgart’s Wataru Endo and Hiroki Ito played in full. Genki Haraguchi did not start.
