The second leg of the Champions League (CL) first round (round of 16) took place on 14 March between Manchester C (England) and Leipzig (Germany).
For Manchester C, it was a challenge for their long-cherished dream of a big year.
The first leg at home to Leipzig on 22 February ended in a 1-1 draw. They will return to Manchester to settle the matter. Manchester C’s starting line-up included mainstays Kevin de Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland. Meanwhile, Leipzig’s starting line-up included Josko Gwaldior, Konrad Reimer and Timo Werner.
In the 18th minute of the match, Lodri headed in from a left corner kick and Benjamin Henrichs’ hand was confirmed, giving Manchester C a penalty kick. Erling Haaland duly converted the penalty and Manchester C took the lead.
In the 24th minute, Erling Haaland pushed the ball home after De Bryne’s left-footed mid-range shot hit the crossbar and bounced back for Manchester C to add to their big scoreline. In first-half added time, Ruben Diaz again headed in from a left corner kick. The spill hit the post and Erling Haaland pushed the ball home to complete his hat-trick and take the game into half-time.
Manchester C continued to attack in the second half, and in the 49th minute Ilkay Gündoğan received Jack Grealish’s turn and cut inside the penalty area. In the 53rd minute, from a right-footed corner kick, Harland finally pushed the ball home with his left foot.
In the 57th minute, ‘the man’ came close again. Manuel Akanji met Riyad Mahrez’s cross ball. His slight touch was deflected in by the goalkeeper, but Erling Haaland was on hand to finish the spilled ball with his right foot. This was Haaland’s fifth goal of the day. He showed his impressive scoring ability.
In added time in the second half, Mahrez dribbled in from the right and connected with the centre, and De Bryne finally dinked a right-footed shot into the middle. The beautiful strike was Manchester C’s seventh goal. The game went to time. Manchester C had reached the quarter-finals for the sixth season in a row. Leipzig, on the other hand, succumbed to Manchester C’s explosive attack and failed to reach the last eight for the first time in three seasons.
The draw for the quarter-finals is scheduled for 17 March. The first leg of the quarter-finals will be held on 11 or 12 April and the second leg on 18 or 19 April.
