Elizabeth Holmes (39), founder of the medical technology company Theranos and convicted fraudster, is about to say goodbye to ‘freedom’ after being sentenced to 11 years in prison.

Holmes, once described as America’s youngest self-employed female billionaire (net worth $4.5 billion), was convicted in January 2022 on four of 11 counts of fraud and conspiracy related to Theranos, which she founded with a $9 billion investment. The company has since gone bankrupt, after its blood testing technology was exposed by reporter John Kaleilow as not working. The revelations triggered a regulatory investigation and a lawsuit by the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Holmes, however, has managed to delay her prison appearance by appealing against her conviction and further appealing the judge’s dismissal. After losing a recent appeal, she is expected to begin her sentence at the Federal Women’s Detention Centre in Bryan, Texas.

During the trial, Holmes allegedly lived on a 74-acre property in Woodside, one of Silicon Valley’s wealthiest neighbourhoods; according to CNBC, the total property was put up for sale in September 2021 for USD 135 million. Also, before Theranos went bankrupt, Holmes routinely ate at fine restaurants and went shopping, according to emails cited by prosecutors during the trial. According to a recent profile in The New York Times, Holmes enjoyed walks on the beach and took his two children under the age of three to the San Diego Zoo.

However, according to a sketch published by the Journal based on testimonies from people who had served time in Bryan Prison, Holmes’ new stay will be in a cell the same size as the toilet in his current home. The cell at Bryan Prison would have an open doorway with no door, according to the drawings, and Holmes could live with three other prisoners.

This disturbance of Holmes is depicted in The Dropout. The role of Holmes was popularly played by Amanda Seyfried.
