Does “The Flash,” which opened in Japan and the U.S. on Friday, June 16, live up to its rave reviews? Some audiences may find that it has dashed past their expectations.
Synopsis of “The Flash”
The Flash, the fastest man in history, returns to the day his mother was murdered in order to save his mother, who died when he was a child, and his father, who was falsely accused of a crime he did not commit. However, after altering his past, Flash finds himself in a different world where he is 18 years old, living happily with his parents. Flash’s “world-altering” brings back General Zod, the “most powerful enemy” that Superman once defeated in a deadly battle in “Man of Steel” (2013), and the world is on the verge of destruction. The two Flashes, along with the “legendary” Batman and Superman’s cousin Supergirl, face a desperate situation.
The Flash” box-office performance in its home country
Although box office figures have not yet been determined due to the simultaneous release of the film in the U.S. and Japan, James Gunn of DC Studios has described it as “one of the best superhero films of all time,” and has positioned it as “the starting point of the DC Universe. The Flash has received rave reviews from Tom Cruise and Stephen King, who saw it earlier, as well as from critics attending CinemaCon.
Reviews of The Flash
Is “The Flash” living up to the rave reviews? Some audiences may feel that it has dashed past their expectations.
The film has three main attractions: comedy, which is one of the best in superhero movies; epic, realistic action realized with stunning CGI; and storytelling that humanizes each of the heroes. The theme of time travel, which could easily become clichéd, is chosen, but conversely, the complexity of the multiverse is developed into a rich story exploration.
Michael Keaton, like a fine wine, shows more charm than ever before in his older, reprised Batman. Sasha Calle, with her long blonde hair and darkly modified version of Supergirl with a positive image, is not long in the film but leaves a strong impact, giving women a new superhero to aspire to be. In addition, the cameos and homages to past films work well.
And finally, Ezra Miller as The Flash. This past May, production crew member Paul Austerberry caused controversy when he told CBC that he would “forget” his past problems after watching Ezra’s amazing performance. First of all, many audience members will agree that Ezra’s performance was excellent; he played the two Flash personalities with aplomb, giving a performance that has the potential to make The Flash one of the most popular characters in the DCU.
On the other hand, how many will “forget” Ezra’s past because of it? Admitting it and forgetting it are two different things. Ezra has pledged to address his mental health issues in 2022, and “Ezra is committed to his recovery,” said David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, in February 2023. Director Andy Muschietti wants Ezra to play the role if they do a sequel. Ezra has won my trust so far with his performance. The industry is watching to see if he can win their trust again as a person to make a sequel.
