In the singles quarterfinals, Kei Nishikori (UNIQLO), formerly ranked No. 4 in the men’s world, playing his first real match in 18 months, won 6-4, 6-2 over Adam Walton (AUS), ranked No. 254 in the world, to advance to the semifinals.

 

The quarterfinals were played in consecutive games after the second round on June 15. In the first set, Nishikori broke first in the fourth game to take the match 2-1, and although he was unable to hold on in the ninth game at 5-3, he broke in the 10th game immediately after to take the match 6-4. In the second set, Nishikori’s opponent injured his right ankle in the third game. Nishikori did not lose momentum until the end, winning four games in a row from 2-2 to dominate 6-2.

 

The semifinals will be played on June 17.

 

Nishikori underwent hip surgery last January and injured his right ankle during rehabilitation. A benign tumor (ganglion) developed, affecting the nerves and triggering pain. She was unable to compete, and her highest world ranking, No. 4, has been unranked since October 17 last year. In the first round, she won 6-2, 6-4 against World No. 333 Christian Langmo (USA), and in the second round, she defeated World No. 258 Mitchell Krueger (USA), 4-6, 6-6.
