Presidential guards in western Africa’s Niger sealed off the presidential residence and presidential office in the capital Niamey on July 26 and detained President Bazoum, AFP reported.
The presidential office posted on Twitter that Bazoum and his family are safe.
According to a source close to Bazoum, the blockade was set up after the security forces became “furious” for some reason, and “talks” were underway between Bazoum and the security forces.
According to reports, Niamey, the capital, has so far been calm, and no special military deployments or sounds of gunfire have been observed. The military had previously staged a coup in Niger in 2010 and detained the president.
According to the Associated Press, the presidential office posted on Twitter that Bazoum and his family are safe. It added that the security forces had tried unsuccessfully to gain support from other security forces and that the army was ready to attack if they did not change their minds.
In recent years, there have been a series of military coups in Niger’s neighborhood: coups in neighboring Mali in 2020 and 2021. In Burkina Faso, also a neighbor, there have been two coups in 2022 alone.
