This was Lizzo’s first visit to Japan. The day before her first live performance in Japan, he visited the Sumida River Fireworks Festival, a famous summer event in Japan.
Due to the spread of the new coronavirus, the Sumida River Fireworks Festival had not been held for some time, but this year it was revived for the first time in four years. It was the first time in a long time that the fireworks display attracted 1.03 million visitors, the largest number ever.
Lizzo and her boyfriend Mike were among them, and the two changed into yukata and took a photo at Hie Shrine in Akasaka, Tokyo. The photo reads, “Celebrating Nippon’s Sumida River Fireworks Festival. I am humbled by the welcome I have received and honored to be invited into your culture. I will never forget this kind hospitality,” he commented, sharing her memories of Japan on Instagram.

Lizzo and Mike’s yukata were handmade by the mother of Lizzo’s nail artist, Japanese manicurist Rie Ishiz, who is in charge of Lizzo’s nails. Lizzo said, “When Rie told me that her mother wanted to custom make yukata for me and Mike, I was very honored and could not refuse. As a guest of Japanese culture, I admire the intricate detail that went into this garment,” she captioned it.
