The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced on August 7 that it has detained one woman, who is believed to be an informant to Russia, in connection with an assassination plot against President Zelensky.
The name of the detained woman has not been released, but according to an SBU statement, she is from Mykolaiv Oblast in southern Ukraine.
According to the SBU, the woman was “gathering information” about President Zelensky’s planned visit to Mykolaiv at the end of July in order to formulate a plan to kill him with an air strike.
However, SBU personnel received information about “suspect subversion activities. They said that security measures were strengthened to prevent the assassination from taking place.
According to the SBU, the woman was seized and detained when she “attempted to pass information to the invaders.
The SBU also monitored her communications and confirmed that she was responsible for locating electronic warfare systems and military ammunition depots.
The woman allegedly visited various locations in the region and photographed Ukrainian facilities and other locations.
According to the investigation, the woman is a resident of Ochakiv, Mykolayiv Oblast, and had worked as a sales clerk at a military store.
President Zelensky has been the target of several assassination attempts since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine last February. Russian special forces were tasked with eliminating President Zelensky immediately after the invasion.
According to an April 2022 article in Time magazine, Russian troops attempted to kill or capture President Zelensky by parachuting into the capital city of Kyiv on February 24, shortly after the invasion began.
