Director discusses scenes shot in Tom Cruise’s garage at his home.
Director Christopher McQuarrie revealed on the Empire Spoiler Specials podcast that some of the key scenes in the film “Mission: Impossible/Dead Reckoning PART ONE” were shot in Tom Cruise’s garage.
Director McQuarrie, who was struggling with how and when to reveal information about Marie, the mysterious woman in Ethan’s life before the IMF, said, “The mission briefing scene was all built up in a week and shot in a day. Except for the insert, which was shot in the garage of Tom’s house in Florida. It was the missing element. (We kept struggling with what the flashback to Marie meant,” he continued.
“I was in the editing room and I said, ‘Stop asking the audience to figure it out for themselves. People want to know. So I thought, ‘I have to be honest with them. So I called Tom and said, ‘I screwed up. One important picture is missing. (We need a picture of (the perpetrator/suspect’s) face. It’s not enough to say in the abstract. I said, ‘We need this picture.
Incidentally, when director McQuarrie realized that he needed a photograph to make the scene work, he thought it would be better to start from scratch, “I took one photograph, and that triggered the decision to reshoot the whole thing. We took all the desks, flooring, bags, some photos, guns, and basic props to Tom’s garage at his home in Florida and re-shot everything with a divided crew,” he said.
