Former Smash Mouth vocalist Steve Harwell has died.

Rolling Stone magazine confirmed the news to the band’s manager, Robert Hayes.

 

He was 56. In a statement, Robert said that Steve “passed away surrounded by family and friends” at his home in Boise, Idaho, adding that he “passed peacefully and stress-free” and that “Steve’s legacy will live on through his music.”

Prior to the delivery of his obituary, Steve had reportedly suffered liver failure and was under hospice care with little time to live. Steve was also said to have suffered from cardiomyopathy and Wernicke’s encephalopathy.

Steve formed Smash Mouth in 1994. The band had two Top 10 singles, “Walkin’ on the Sun” and “All Star,” and their second album, Astro Lounge, went triple platinum. Steve left Smash Mouth in October 2021 due to health issues.
