Moreno: “It’s a great honor to have owned the team for 20 seasons.

The Angels, the team to which Shohei Ohtani belongs, announced on August 23 (August 24 in Japan) that they are considering selling the team. Arturo Moreno, team owner, said, “It has been a great honor and privilege to own the Angels for 20 seasons. This difficult decision was ours to make and was well worth the consideration, but my family and I have come to the conclusion that now is the time,” he said in a statement.

The team has begun the process to review strategic options, including a possible sale of the team.

It has retained Galatioto Sports Partners as financial advisors. The team will refrain from commenting during this time. A change in ownership could have a major impact on Ohtani’s departure, who will become an FA in 2023.

According to the Orange County Register, Mexican-American owner Moreno purchased the team from Walt Disney during the 2003 season for $184 million (about ¥25 billion). The economic magazine Forbes estimates that the company is currently worth more than $2 billion (approximately 273.5 billion yen).

In the off-season of 2003, when Moreno took over as owner, the team made major reinforcements with Bradimir Guerrero, Bartolo Colon, and others, and won its first regional championship in 18 years the following year in 2004.

The team went on to win district championships in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2014, but failed to reach the World Series.

The last time the team made the playoffs was in 2014, and this season, with Mike Trout, Ohtani, and others, the team finished fourth in the district, losing 52-70.
