Google Teases Numerous Widgets for “iOS 16” Lock Screen, Including Search and Maps

Google announced on September 12 (local time) widgets such as Gmail and Google Maps that can be displayed on the new lock screen of iOS 16 in conjunction with the launch of Apple’s “iOS 16”. The company said it will release them within the next few weeks.

Google teases a number of widgets for the “iOS 16” lock screen.

One of the features of iOS 16 is the ability to customize the lock screen. In addition to displaying your favorite photos and customizing fonts, you can add widgets for apps, including third-party apps.

 

To add a widget, long-press the lock screen, tap [Customize], select a wallpaper from [Add New] -> [Add New Wallpaper], and then tap [Add Widget] on the customize screen. As of this writing, only stock app widgets such as Calendar, Battery, and Fitness are displayed, but third-party widgets are expected to appear soon.

 

The widgets introduced by Google are as follows

 

  • Google Search: search, voice search, shopping, translation

  • Chrome Browser: launch browser, voice search, launch in incognito mode, launch dinosaur game

 

  • Google Drive: open documents and starred files that have been suggested for editing with a single tap

  • Google Maps: real-time traffic conditions, estimated travel time to home, work, etc., and nearby restaurants, stores, etc.

 

  • Gmail: number of incoming emails

  • Google News: Display of new news headlines
