The 80th Golden Globe Awards, the prelude to the Academy Awards, was held on January 10, 2010.
Angela Bassett of “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” won for Best Supporting Actress.
The Banshees of Inisherin,” starring Colin Farrell, for its darkly comic depiction of shattered friendships set against the backdrop of the Irish Civil War. The film, which had received the most nominations, successfully won the three most awards, including for its lead actor, Colin Farrell. Steven Spielberg also won Best Director for “The Fabelmans,” a warm portrayal of childhood.
One of the highlights of the ceremony was Angela Bassett’s win for Best Supporting Actress for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”. Angela became the first actor to win a major acting award for a film based on a Marvel comic book. This was Bassett’s second Globe win (and second nomination) for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy, having previously won for her role in the 1993 Tina Turner biopic “TINA Tina.”
Angela paid tribute to Chadwick Boseman, who died of cancer in 2020 at the age of 43, saying, “We mourned, loved, healed, and were surrounded by the light and spirit of Chadwick Boseman every single day.
From Japan, Masaaki Yuasa’s theatrical animation “Inu-Oh” was nominated for Best Animated Film, but did not win. Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” won the award.
Jonathan Kee Kwan of “Everything Everywhere All at Once” won for Best Supporting Actor. He was a child actor in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” and had been away from acting until he appeared in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.
As I grew older, I began to wonder if that [his child role in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom”] was just luck. For years, I wondered if I had nothing left to give. No matter what I did, I could never surpass what I had accomplished as a child. But then, more than 30 years later, two men thought of me. Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, the director, remembered that child and gave me the opportunity to try again,” he said in an inspiring speech.
