Frank Ocean as headliner at Coachella Festival.

Frank Ocean headlining the Coachella Festival in 2023, the largest music festival in the US, held in the desert Coachella Valley in Indio, California, USA.

Frank was originally scheduled to headline the Coachella Festival in 2020, but the festival was cancelled due to the spread of the new coronavirus, delaying the festival by almost three years from its original schedule and allowing him to headline in full.

Frank’s performance at this year’s Coachella Festival was much anticipated, as he has released songs but no album since the release of his album Blonde in 2016 and has not performed live in over six years.

Most of the artists’ performances at this year’s Coachella Festival were broadcast live on YouTube and could be viewed at home, but on the day of the festival, it was announced that Frank and Björk would not be streamed live.

At this point, the home group was disappointed. However, while tweets of disappointment from the home group flooded Twitter, the local group also saw an unexpected performance.

Announcement of forced termination echoed through the venue.

Frank Ocean was due to perform at 10pm on 17 April, but did not appear until about an hour later. But his feet were in slippers. And even when the stage started, he didn’t sing, was almost invisible behind a giant screen, or performed with a mouth-to-mouth performance, in a sense, he did whatever he wanted.

In 2013, Coachella Festival established a “curfew” between Coachella organisers Goldenvoice and the city of Indio, California, where the festival is held, where a fine of USD 20,000 (approximately 2.6 million yen) per day is imposed for five minutes too long. Pitchfork reports that a fine of $20,000 per day is imposed if five minutes are exceeded, and $1,000 for every minute after that.

This time, Frank was an hour late, which of course meant he had to break his ‘curfew’. Frank covered the Isley Brothers’ ‘At Your Best (You Are Love)’ around midnight after curfew, and then suddenly went to his sleeve. He was then expected to return to the stage again, but was told that the curfew had been reached and the show was over. Incidentally, at this point it was 25 minutes past curfew, NME reported.

Hastily changed set on the day and very late.

Frank Ocean’s stage was delayed for an hour that day because of a sudden set change. He had originally planned to build an ice rink on stage and have ice skaters on stage, and had been practising for weeks.

However, Frank decided at the last minute on the day that the ice rink was not needed. So the ice skaters were staged to walk on stage without skates. This led to all sorts of chaos, a source told Festive Owl, a social networking account for festival news and other information.

‘The guy walking around him at the start of the performance was actually an ice skater who had been practising for weeks and was actually supposed to skate as part of the production. Coachella had to dismantle the stage, which had been planned and approved months in advance, melt down the entire ice rink and re-set it as Frank had decided without warning today. This resulted in a one-hour delay, as you can see. This happened when the doors had already opened on the Sunday and people were securing their places to see him. Had it not been for the last minute change, he would not have performed, leaving the festival without a headliner to close the festival. Frank also had to do without a live stream at the last minute, which left the Coachella side with a bad taste in their mouths. After all, he, and this is the word I heard, ‘didn’t want to be there, but seemed obliged to be’. ‘ Everything was destroyed at the last minute, including him.”

However, TMZ reported that Frank was involved in a bicycle accident at the venue when he rehearsed a few days before Coachella and injured his ankle, which caused the set change.

Frank took to the stage in memory of his late brother.

A source said that he did not want to be there, but it seemed like he had an obligation to be there, but he still took the stage because he had memories of his late brother.

Frank lost his 18-year-old brother, Ryan Blow, in a car accident in 2020. The car Ryan was riding in caught fire when it crashed into a tree in the median, and Ryan and Ryan’s friend, who was a passenger, died.

The Coachella Festival holds many memories for Ryan, and Frank said on stage, “My life has changed a lot over the last few years. My brother and I used to come to this festival a lot and I feel like half the time I was forced to come here because I don’t like the dustiness of the place. I always avoided coming because I always had a respiratory infection after attending, but I always ended up coming here. One of my fondest memories is seeing Rae Sremmurd on stage with my brother and Travis (Bennett). We were dancing to their music in that tent. He would have been so excited to be here with all of us. I just want to say thank you for all your support and listening and love all this time.”

Frank was a headliner with a full house, but was unable to give the best performance he wanted. As a result, he disappointed a lot of fans, but the Coachella Festival is a two-week festival, so what will he show us in the second week?
