Drama I AM Ruth with daughter Mia Threapleton.
At the British Academy Awards for Television (BAFTA TV) on 14 May (UK time), the drama I Am Ruth won Best Film and Best Actress in a Single Drama category. For Kate Winslet, who has won three awards in the film category, this is the first time in her career that she has won in the TV category.
I Am Ruth, which is being broadcast exclusively in Japan for the first time this month in May on the BS10 Star Channel and exclusively in Japan for the first time on the video distribution service Star Channel EX, is a frank portrayal of the emotions of modern women in various life predicaments, with one episode each starring a leading role for some of Britain’s most talented actresses. It is the first episode of the third season of the anthology drama I AM My Juncture. The series is characterised by the fact that the lead actresses decide on the episode themes together with director Dominique Savage, and that there are no written scripts for the lines, with everyone improvising and acting.
Kate, who liked the concept and was chosen to appear in season 3, chose social media as her theme. She played the mother herself and cast her own daughter, Mia Sleapleton, as her teenage daughter, marking their first full-fledged collaboration as a father and daughter whose relationship is strained by their addiction to social media.
Kate, who won the first BAFTA TV award of her career for this film, made the following appeal from the stage.
‘If I could cut this trophy in two, I would give half to my daughter Mia. We achieved this together, Mia. (’Mia has sometimes struggled, immersing herself in terrifying areas of emotion. I was just overwhelmed by it.
I Am Ruth was created for parents, their children and families who feel exposed to the dangers of online society, and for parents who wish to have conversations with their teenagers but can no longer do so. To young people who are obsessed with social media and its dark side, they are not necessary in your lives.
To those in power and those who can make a difference, criminalise harmful content. Root out harmful content. We don’t need those things. We want our children back. We don’t want to feel like we can’t sleep because we are worried about our children’s mental health.
Young people who may be listening to this speech, who feel trapped in an unhealthy world, please seek help. There is no need to be ashamed to admit that you need support. Please ask for help. Thank you.”
The drama I Am Ruth is available in subtitled and dubbed versions exclusively on Star Channel EX and exclusively on BS10 Star Channel.
