Rina Sawayama has scathingly criticized Matty Healy for his comments.

Matty Healy, frontman of the rock band The 1975, left a comment on a podcast show he appeared on this past February in which he poked fun at the roots of female rapper Ice Spice and said that he has “gotten off” watching pornography in which women of color are treated roughly.

These remarks caused quite a stir, and ESEA Music, a U.K.-based organization of East and Southeast Asian music industry professionals and artists, also issued a statement condemning them.

In an effort to somehow defuse the situation, Matty issued an apology during a live performance in Oakland in April.

However, Matty made a statement in a subsequent interview that could be taken as a reopening of the situation, and the flames show no sign of abating.

Rina has released songs on the same record label as The 1975, Dirty Hit.

Dirty Hit is a company run by The 1975’s manager, Jamie Auborn, and Matty served as its director from 2018 until April of this year.

On Saturday, June 24, Rina, who appeared at a concert in Glastonbury, England, touched on the debacle as she introduced the song “STFU!” and opened with, “The next song I wrote because I was sick of microaggressions*,” she said, “So tonight, this song is about ‘Ghetto Gaggers’ (a I’m giving it to a white male who watches ‘Ghetto Gaggers’ (a porn series) and makes fun of Asians on his podcast. He even has my original rights. I’ve had enough of it,” she said, expressing her anger at Matty.
