Tom Cruise, who celebrated his 60th birthday last year, works seven days a week, mainly acting and producing, but he also spends time training for crazy stunts like the one he attempted in “Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One,” the latest film in the series. He revealed to Fandango.
Tom, who professes that he has “dedicated my life to filmmaking,” said, “As an actor and throughout my life, I have always trained solely to make movies. I have trained in singing, dancing, biking, cars, and many other things. In my private life, I like skydiving and Speed Flying. I like to learn those things and apply them to movies,” he says, “but it’s really difficult. How do I train for that? How do I keep that level? How can I reach the peak at that moment? We have to find a solution to these problems. For example, when we shoot a scene where we are running as fast as we can, we don’t just run once and that’s it.
Tom also thinks about what happens before and after he shoots a tough scene, “So I have to think about the time I need to recover and what scenes I need to shoot before and after that. I’ve gotten better at structuring things in the film. I can change the way I use my body, avoid fight scenes, and so on. We don’t want to fight before we are at full speed. I always keep in mind how to prepare and how to recover,” he added.
The pressure on Tom is considerable, but he doesn’t mind it at all. “I work seven days a week, and during this time I’m also producing and working on everything. I must say I enjoy the pressure. I enjoy the challenge. When I wake up, I find myself enjoying this.
Incidentally, in Tom’s mind, no filming = a day off. When asked in an interview how he spends his day off, he once surprised people by saying, “This is a day off for me because I don’t have any filming today.
