Russian celebrities and influencers also posted videos and images on Instagram of themselves wearing Barbie clothes and lip-synching to Aqua’s “Barbie Girl” song.

This is not the first time Mattel dolls have caused a stir in Russia. President Vladimir Putin banned Barbie along with other Western toys in 2002. The Russian Ministry of Education had announced that the toys had a “harmful influence” on children, “arouse sexual urges,” and “are believed to encourage consumerism.
