In Senegal, West Africa, where violent protests have been held by supporters against the conviction of an opposition leader, the use of TikTok, a video-sharing application, has been suspended because it “spreads messages that threaten the stability of the country.

TikTok is a social network favored by those with malicious intent.

According to Reuters and other sources, Senegal’s communications minister said in a statement on August 2 that TikTok has been suspended because it is being used “to spread hateful and destructive messages that threaten the stability of the country. It stated that “it is a social network favored by people with malicious intent.”

For the same reason, Internet access has also been restricted since the end of last month.

According to AFP, supporters in Senegal protested violently over the conviction of an opposition leader for immoral acts, claiming that the conviction was intended to disqualify him from running in the next presidential election. Clashes with security forces have resulted in deaths, and the opposition leader is under investigation for attempting to incite a riot.

There are fears that the deteriorating situation in Senegal, which had been relatively stable economically and politically, will lead to further instability in the West African region.
