The plaintiffs alleged that Apple intentionally slowed down older iPhone models in order to force them to upgrade to the latest models.

SiliconValley.com reported that some plaintiffs who had opposed the settlement have been dismissed, allowing Apple’s payment process to move forward.

The settlement received preliminary approval in March 2020. Although the deadline to join the settlement passed long ago, SiliconValley.com reports that approximately 3 million claims have been filed. These people will be waiting more than three years for their checks, which will be about $65 each.

Apple was sued in 2017 after admitting that its “iOS” software was degrading the performance of older iPhones. At that time, the company apologized and took steps to address the issue, including updating the software and reducing the cost of battery replacements.

However, Apple consistently denied any wrongdoing and stated that the slowdown was merely designed to protect the iPhone from automatically shutting down during processing if it is aging, in a cold environment, or with low charge.

The settlement covers users who owned an iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, or iPhone SE with “iOS 10.2.1” or later prior to December 21, 2017. Users who owned an “iPhone 7” and “iPhone 7 Plus” with “iOS 11.2” or later on or before that date are also eligible.
